Ask a question

For the best fit, pillow covers should be smaller than the insert. If you choose to order your cover the same size as your insert it will be loose
All of my pillows are photographed using feather pillow inserts. If you use stiff synthetic fill inserts, the fit and look will be different. If you do not want to use feather inserts I recommend a high quality feather alternative, or kapok. Please check my insert listings for options

The textile clearly finds its name and roots from the Baoulé, Akan people of Côte d’Ivoire, but originates from the 16th century Ashanti Kingdom, which stretched from present-day countries of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire
For centuries, the fabric has mostly been adorned during community or traditional gatherings. For many local communities, the fabric is the main source of revenue. In the small town of Sakiaré, it's reported that 95% of the villagers are weavers
Everything, from producing the tools and equipment, to coloring and weaving the textile, is done by hand
First the craftspersons, mostly women, use a drop-spindle tool to convert raw cotton into single threads or yarns. The yarn is then bleached to remove all impurities and dirt, and later exposed to dry under the sun
After a few days, the same yarn is dyed with natural dyes, either mineral or vegetable based, usually from indigo leaves or other natural plants. After being soaked in the natural colorant, the yarns are left to dry under the sun once again
Before the weaving process, the weaver would set his design in mind and actualize the concept by arranging the colored threads on a two wooden stands
The colored threads are then handwoven into narrow warps of textiles, they are then sewn together, edge to edge, as to a form a full length fabric

Due to the fact that this is a handmade fabric, there will be variations in color and texture
Baule is NOT produced in a factory so the colors are not the same as factory production
The charm of these fabrics is that they are vintage, they have a story, and this you can see by way of small discolorations, fabric slubs, some loose threads
A set of Baule pillows will never be identical due to the intricate patterns but I do my best to cut them as similarly as possible, taking care not to waste fabric

Although Baule is vintage and has been washed it is not guaranteed that it will not bleed or discolor
It is recommended that you dry clean or carefully spot clean only as needed

Baule is 100% cotton
Backing material is cotton canvas
The pillow is fitted with a hidden zipper

Define "Imperfections" (Mudcloth & Indigo Textiles)

Mudcloth and Indigo textiles are made almost entirely by hand. Imperfections that should be expected include:

-Pattern variations / asymmetric pattern and seam placement
-Design and paint smudges
-Textile nubs and pulls at seams where panels are sewn together

It is widely accepted that these unique attributes are not defects.

We adhere to extremely high standards in our production process, but it is important to stress that these textiles are inherently imperfect (and undeniably beautiful!)

Sizing details

When available, all of our drop down menu options list pillow cover sizes. We suggest using a pillow insert 1-2 inches larger than pillow cover for a stuffed look. (ie 20x20 insert for a 19x19 cover)

There may be small variations in the finished size, as our pillows covers are handmade.

Please read individual item details before purchase.

When will this ship?

Your pillow covers are lovingly made to order. We are as excited to make them as you are to receive them! We ask that if your order is still inside the shipping window detailed in item descriptions and order confirmations, please refrain from sending convos requesting shipping estimates. Blocking time to investigate and respond to these convos slows production.

International Orders

We gladly ship internationally. Customers are responsible for any applicable customs / import taxes.
